THE LAST TRAVELOGUE OF ALBERT SITZFLEISCH
Stephen Brandes
Friday 9 - Sunday 25 May All day
UPPER CATHEDRAL CLOSE

Multiple billboards create a sculptural trail through Upper Cathedral Close and imagine a future time when travel is only available to a privileged few.

Albert Sitzfleisch, a fictional traveller, reports from his journey across Europe, commenting on its recent history. The excerpts from his diary reflect his uncertain position when faced with cultural difference. His short texts are set against a visual backdrop of a world that has visibly changed. The images derive from photographic collage and hand-rendered drawings that are re-worked through digital editing. Inspired by personal observations, with a leaning towards absurdist invention and references to episodes in modern European history, these works address our differing perspectives on familiar histories, unfamiliar cultures and an indeterminate future, with a measured mixture of humour and poignancy.

Stephen Brandes lives and works in Cork; he represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale 2005 as part of ‘Ireland at Venice’, and has shown in numerous exhibitions both in Ireland and internationally.
