Parinirvana Festival

Parinirvana Festival

Sunday 15 Feb
10pm - 4 pm

No, the Buddha's not having a nap. The famous 'reclining Buddha' images you find in paintings and statues are in fact depicting the serene death of the Buddha, which Buddhists call Parinirvana. This is where he relinquishes his last ever human body and enters complete Nirvana. His final words to his disciples are: 'All things are impermanent. With mindfulness strive on!'

The day will include short talks, discussion groups and reflections around the theme of death and letting go. In today's modern world, the subject of 'death' is often considered taboo and morbid. But in Buddhism, reflecting on death is seen as an essential way to helps us to live life more fully, freely and joyfully.

In the afternoon there'll be a puja (Buddhist ritual) where we can recollect anyone we know who has died in the past year. Please bring photos to put on the shrine if you like. Join in with as little or as much of the ritual as you wish.

Also, you're welcome to come just for the morning, or just the afternoon, or even just for lunch! (which is at 1pm)
