How Norfolk Got the Groove
Friday 18 October
The Curve 6.30pm-8pm
John Davison present in music, words and video clips, the story of how Norfolk was one of the first parts of England to hear Rhythm and Blues when black American service men came to the region during and after the Second World War.
This previously untold story explains how they brought hard rocking rhythm and blues, jazz and swing records with them – on the weekends the clubs and pubs of Norwich were rammed and jammed to the sounds of these imported records belonging to USA servicemen who were bussed into the city from the nearby air bases. Local jazz musicians who were there tell their story of how black American culture influenced them in these entertaining afternoon and evening sessions, featuring live music.
