Take a circular walk on the Wherryman's Way

The Wherryman's Way is a 35-mile footpath from Norwich to Great Yarmouth, with ten circular village walks en-route.  The 2 mile circular walk from Surlingham (park by the church) goes through a Marsh nature reserve, Church ruin, and past a nice pub.

Ranworth Broad and Ranmoor Church

Not quite Norwich, but close enough.  Climb the 89 steps and two ladders to the top of St Helen's Church at Ranmoor for panoramic views of the Norfolk Broads.  There is a 'suggested donation' box.

Also of interest at Ranmoor is Ranworth Broad and Nature Reserve, which has a Wildlife Centre run by Norfolk Wildlife Trust (check the website for opening times)

Enjoy a free winter walk around Earlham Park

Earlham Park is very pretty at this time of year.  It has wide open spaces, woods and walks beside the river Yare.  The park has toilets, attractive seating area, wildlife interest, woods and river walk, and a café (check opening times).

It is maintained by Norwich Fringe Project - Visit their website for more information about green spaces in Norwich http://www.norwichfringeproject.co.uk

Carys Meadow - Free walks and picnics

A green oasis in the city!  Cary's Meadow is a special site, located on the edge of Norwich; it was once a traditional river meadow.  Cary's Meadow is an important grassland habitat containing a mix of Calcareous neutral and wet grass lands. Look out for Bee Orchard, Pyramid Orchard and Southern Marsh Orchard.

Cary's Meadow provides an interesting and peaceful short circular walk. Paths are uneven and liable to flooding in prolong wet weather.  Particularly nice in the spring though - lots of butterflies!

Norwich Riverside Walk

Go for a riverside walk around Norwich and see the snowdrops and other signs of spring.  Good for picnics as well.  Watch out for 'Cow Tower'.  And check out the Cathedral while you're at it.

Whittlingham Broad and Marsh

Take a stroll around Whitlingham Broad, on the doorstep of Norwich.  It's about 2.5 miles walk around the large Broad, plus there are loads of little spots including Whittlingham Marsh which is right up the end just before you go under the A47.  There's a nice (short) 30 mins circular walk around the marshes where you can see some pretty rare butterflies, and on the walk back you go under the A47 which can be quite hairraising when a lorry comes over!

The parking does cost money now, but there are places you can park for free (they put signs up to make you feel guilty, but don't let that put you off!)

Ranworth Broad Visitor Centre

Visit Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s floating visitor centre at Ranworth. Nice any time of year.  Learn about the wildlife and catch a glimpse of some spectacular birds, possibly even an elusive osprey if it returns to the broad this summer.

 www.norfolkwildlifetrust.org.uk

2 While in Ranworth, you can visit St Helen’s Church, sometimes called the cathedral of the Broads, and climb the 89 spiral steps and two ladders to the top of the tower for the best view in Broadland.
